OTW’s Core Products: The 42″ Jersey Shape LCD Barricade

If you’ve been around for a while, you know just how much we value our customers and clients, and how grateful we are for the continued support year after year. Because of that support, word of mouth, and your wonderful reviews and feedback, we have seen growth over the years in many ways. 

As a refresher for our dedicated customers – and as an intro for the new OTW community members we’ve gained – we wanted to create a series featuring our core products and why we’re so excited to talk about them! 

Without further ado, here’s the first of our original OTW products that have stood the test of time and been with us since the beginning: the 42” Jersey Shape LCD Barricade.  

The History of the Jersey Shape Barricade

One of the first barricades that OTW Safety designed and manufactured, the 42” jersey shape LCD draws its inspiration from the first original highway barriers created in New Jersey and California to better define lanes along treacherous stretches of cliffside road. At just 18 inches high and made from poured concrete in 1955, the original jersey shape barriers were only the beginning of the journey to safer roads. They defined lanes well enough, but cars were, unfortunately, still able to clear them in collisions. This led to a need for stricter safety standards and not one, not two, but three different versions of the same barricade at different heights – the 20-inch, the 24-inch, and the 32-inch. The 32-inch iteration, with a 24-inch base, was the one finally determined to uphold Federal safety standards the best and became the benchmark for all future jersey shape barricades. 

Years later, with innovation happening all the while to improve the shape and safety of the barricade, another, taller version (creatively called the “Ontario Tall-Wall), was born. This 42-inch tall barricade was better at blocking headlight beams from oncoming traffic and safer for large trucks, and so it became the gold standard for LCD barricades at active construction sites. 

Meet our Trusted Friend, the OTW 42” Jersey Shape LCD Barricade 

Made in the USA and 100% recyclable, the 42” Jersey Shape LCD Barricade is one of our best-sellers of all time, and for good reason. Available in safety orange or bright white (and custom Pantone colors with a minimum order!), the 42” LCD is blow-molded from UV-resistant high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic, which is durable, reliable, and made to last. It’s also versatile, with the ability to transform into a highly secure site perimeter with our Barricade Fence Panels and a Pedestrian and Vehicle Gate adapter or two.

Because it meets both MUTCD 6F.66 specifications and is NCHRP-350 tested and accepted at the TL-3 level for LCDs, this 42” jersey barrier is often written into projects alongside active traffic, as well as proposals for large-scale sites.

Don’t Forget the Accessories! 

Created to pair with most standard construction barricades, as well as all OTW barricades, the Bi-Directional Hazard Light (BDL) is an essential companion to the 42” Jersey Shape LCD Barricade. Designed with brighter, longer-lasting LEDs (available in Amber Yellow or Red), improved battery life, and more efficient solar panels, the BDL will light up any construction site and indicate hazards all night long. 

Add some Barricade Fence Panels to your OTW42 barricades, and you’ve got a fully secure perimeter for any site, large or small. The Barricade Fence Panels are created from galvanized steel and are an excellent way to increase safety, as well as keep unwanted visitors from entering a site. If extra privacy is wanted, optional mesh panels do a great job at ensuring an additional level of protection.   

Why We Love the 42” Jersey Shape LCD Barricade 

As the largest barricade that OTW Safety offers, it is well able to protect construction sites of all sizes, roadside work zones, and more, particularly with its perfectly proportioned jersey shape and linkability. We love that it is highly visible and a direct visual and physical barrier between work crews and passersby like motorists and pedestrians. We also love that it’s a fairly lightweight barricade for its size (when empty), making it easy to transport for setup and teardown, even when connected as a full perimeter wall. Finally, when ballasted with the appropriate amount of water, each barricade won’t budge: it weighs in at 170 pounds when ballasted as an LCD but has a max ballast weight of 1330 pounds for heavy-duty situations. This gives you peace of mind in any situation, and you can rest assured that your barricades will do the heavy lifting when it comes to safety.

Barricades have come a long way since the first attempts at improving roadway safety, and, while the goal is always to reduce injuries and fatalities to zero, the numbers have decreased drastically since those early days. 

This decades-long decrease in fatality numbers is largely due to the continually streamlined Federal and state safety standards that have been defined over the years, but numbers unfortunately still remain somewhat high every year, even with active progress toward lowering them. This has led to initiatives like the Safe System approach from the federal government (US DOT, FWHA), as well as Vision Zero and Toward Zero Deaths. These initiatives, alongside the golden standard for traffic and construction barricades like the 42” Jersey Shape Barricade, are reshaping the safety industry and working every day toward a safer future.
