Farmers Market Ogden meets crowd barricades

Road Closed wedge barricade with crowd control barricades in yellow behind.

Welcome to Ogden, where community thrives, the great outdoors is just minutes away from downtown, and where hundreds of small businesses make their home.

Every summer Downtown Ogden comes alive with festivals, outdoor concerts, and, well-known across Northern Utah, Farmers Market Ogden. Every week, dozens of small business owners bring their wares, produce, and delicious food to Historic 25th Street to share with locals and visitors alike.

Thanks to the Ogden Downtown Alliance (ODA), with support from Ogden City, Weber State University, Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital, and more, Farmers Market Ogden is brought to life to “create an inclusionary culture of urban arts and engagement” (ODA). The summer Market runs every year on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, from May 25 through September 14. While the Farmers Market also runs more briefly in the fall and winter, the summer season brings the longest duration of the weekly fair and thousands of visitors to Ogden City.

This explosion of culture, community, and delightful finds draws in over ten thousand attendees each week, with closer to twenty thousand on the busiest days. The market is just one way the Ogden Downtown Alliance seeks to fulfill its goal of “connecting the community to locally owned and independent businesses and “increasing economic vitality and community vibrancy in Downtown Ogden through arts, events, placemaking, and destination development”.

Ogden Downtown Alliance 🫱🏻‍🫲 OTW Safety crowd control barricades

To support their mission, OTW partnered with ODA to help increase the safety measures used to protect the thousands of people populating Historic 25th Street every weekend. OTW Safety provided 60 Billboard Barricades in yellow, orange, and white, along with a custom “Road Closed” wedge barricade. They use the barricades to block street access at seven separate points from one end of the market to the other. Because our crowd control barricades are so easy to maneuver, setup and teardown for the market each week is simple and swift.

ODA’s Thomas Kiernan noted of the crowd barricades: “We have limited storage, so big, heavy metal barricades just don’t really work for us – because we don’t have anywhere to keep them and they’re bulky to move around. One of the things that these [Billboard Barricades] products do is save us so much in space and time… because they’re so lightweight, easy to move around, and they stack together. They save us time every week putting them out, save stress on our backs and our staff, and, because they’re stackable, save us so much space (that we don’t have to go find and pay for) because they fit within the storage we already have”.

He also said, We set this [road] closure and the event up every Saturday morning and have to tear it down by 3 PM [the same day] so that the road can be opened back up to vehicle traffic.”

It’s a big job, and OTW event barricades make this possible! We are thrilled to be a part of helping Farmers Market Ogden come to life each week and connecting the Ogden community.

Supporting local communities together

As you’ll find in our mission statement, OTW is dedicated to creating a “positive impact in the lives of our customers, employees, and communities through meaningful, purpose-driven work”. As the Ogden Downtown Alliance seeks to strengthen its neighborhood by connecting small and local businesses to the community, we saw the perfect opportunity to support their goals and create a positive impact in the local community. ODA thought the same, and said this about our partnership, “OTW [Safety] is great for several reasons. Primarily, we support small and local businesses and OTW is in Salt Lake City, so that was a huge selling point and a factor for us in choosing [them as] a vendor”.

They also said, “But also, the product is great and the service has been great! When I first met with Patrick he brought a lot of ideas to the table too, like color coordinating our closures to not only work for controlling traffic, but in telling vendors where to go to enter and different things like that. So OTW has been fantastic to work with, and the product is great [overall]”.

This personalized service with event barricades speaks to our dedication to our customers and our uncompromising commitment to safety. We know the value of creating safe, easy-to-navigate spaces for events, and we are proud to be supporters of local Utah communities as they seek to bring people together. We especially love outdoor events, as they encourage community, camaraderie, and fun during the summer months!

Event barricade rental for Utah communities

We’ve found that our crowd control barricades are perfect for controlling pedestrian and vehicle traffic in a variety of ways, from creating walkways and separating VIP areas to creating perimeters and blocking streets for road closures. Available for purchase worldwide and for rent in the state of Utah, our plastic crowd control barricades truly make putting together events much easier.

“If you’re looking to use something for your own events, I’m imagining that you’ve experienced other types of barricades like the big heavy metal bicycle barricades… and those are heavy, they don’t stack, and they’re sharp, really sharp. You could wreck yourself on some of those barricades”, says Kiernan. On the other hand, he says, “These [plastic crowd control barricades] are lightweight and they can be filled with water if you need to hold them down, but, for us, we interlock and throw some sandbags on them and they do a great job. They’re also really convenient for all different kinds of staff to pick up and move around because the legs turn, they stack together, and they take up way less space. For road closure, in particular, this works really well for us versus some of the other types we have, because it’s [plastic event barricades] a much better solution for us where we’re trying to close the road quickly and then reopen it at the end of the day”.
